"THE
LAST MALL" LIVE STORY |
Bob here on Sunday, June 22, 2003. Last Tuesday I called the band and asked everyone if they could get a handle on "The Last Mall" in time to perform a quick-and-dirty version at our Friday night 6/20 gig in Carlsbad. I'll cop to the sophomoric undertone of my desire, namely to be able to say that we performed a Steely Dan tune just ten days after its release. No time for a rehearsal, so the plan was simple: run the song as our sound check and then (as long as it didn't completely fall apart), spring it on the 2500+ audience of Steely Dan Fans who would sharing in our excitement would then cut us the appropriate slack. To our very amazement, we each found enough time to get down the basics, and an inspired Tripp Sprague cranked out a full five-piece horn arrangement with 2 hours to spare. To make a long story great, the final experience went off a whole lot better than I/we would have dared to hope, and whadayaknow... the sound guys were rolling tape! (or ripping ions, or whatever the hell it is they do now) It's noisy, it's unbalanced, the feel is tentative in spots, and the lead vocalist is obviously reading the lyrics. Additionally, for a guy who claims to not be trying much to sound like DF, I'm sure bending a lot of vowels in there(same problem I had with the 2vN stuff at first). Anyways, with this disclaimer firmly in place, the moment seems worth sharing for the moment, so download it while you can and let us know what you think... within reason. --Bob Tedde
